Rosneft is recognized as the seventh energy company in the world

The Platts agency yesterday presented another international rating of the largest energy companies. As usual, Russian ones are also represented - Rosneft, Gazprom, LUKOIL and TNK-BP. According to Platts, the most successful among them this year was Rosneft, which took seventh place, having, however, decreased by one line in the ranking compared to last year. LUKOIL's position has also deteriorated. But Gazprom and TNK-BP managed to grow.

The Platts ranking is based on data on companies' assets, revenues, profits and return on invested capital. At the same time, companies must be registered on the stock exchange and have assets exceeding $2 billion. The first line of the rating is occupied by the American Exxon Mobil. Second and third places went to the American Chevron Corporation and the Anglo-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell. The top five also included the British BP and the French Total, respectively.

Russian companies this year were rated differently by the agency. Rosneft lost its position, losing sixth place to the Brazilian Petrobas. Experts explain this by the slow recovery of the Russian market. “Rosneft is looking very good this year in all respects and has very high quotes,” Denis Borisov, an analyst at IFC Solid, told Vremya Novostey. - However, the company lost its position to the Brazilian Petrobas due to the not very good state of affairs on the Russian market. This year, the Brazilian market was much more stable than ours and recovered faster than the domestic market, which saw a fall in the RTS and MICEX indices.” LUKOIL also moved up one line - from 11th to 12th. According to Mr. Borisov, this was due to a decrease in the company's capitalization. “Naturally, the Russian market also has an impact on LUKOIL, reducing the growth rate of the company’s capitalization,” the expert believes. At the same time, Gazprom, on the contrary, managed to rise in the ranking by two positions at once - from eighth place to tenth, despite the not very successful year for the company.

But TNK-BP managed to significantly improve its position, which soared ten points up and took 13th place in the Platts ranking. Experts explain this by the commissioning of two large fields this year. “This year has been very successful for TNK-BP. Thanks to the launch of two large fields - Verkhnechonskoye and Uvata - the company was able to increase production by 2%. In addition, it has very decent financial indicators, so it is not surprising that its position has become so stronger,” Dmitry Lyutyagin, an analyst at Veles Capital, told Vremya Novostey.

According to Troika Dialog analyst Valery Nesterov, the positions of Russian energy companies are strengthening every year, which allows them to occupy the highest places in various ratings. “Our companies have long been first in a variety of ratings. Yes, in terms of reserves we are, of course, inferior to state-owned companies in Iran or Saudi Arabia. But in comparison with public companies operating in market conditions, the performance of Russian companies is very decent,” believes Mr. Nesterov. True, in his opinion, there are a number of factors that do not allow domestic energy companies to be at the top of the ratings. “We are significantly behind the world giants in terms of capital investments and market capitalization. Therefore, it is still far from reaching the very top lines,” the expert believes.
