Russian-American negotiations have begun in Russia to unblock the import of poultry meat from the United States. newspaper The Kommersant writes that at the meeting, which was held behind closed doors, representatives of the American side said that they were ready to change the technology for processing chicken meat if they received a delay of two to three months.

It is worth noting that the meeting in Moscow is still taking place at the level of industry associations, and not at the level of officials.

On January 1, 2010, a decree of Rospotrebnadzor came into force in Russia, which quadruples the maximum chlorine content in the solution for processing poultry carcasses. Russian enterprises can produce up to 90 percent of poultry meat without the use of chlorine-containing drugs, and the Americans have not had time to bring their poultry processing technology into line with new Russian requirements.

Officials have already made some concessions to importers of American chicken. In particular, it was decided that meat that clears customs before January 19 will be sold in Russia without sanitary restrictions.

The quota for imports of poultry meat from the United States for 2010 is 600 thousand tons, which is 77 percent of all quota imports of poultry meat into the Russian Federation and a fifth of all Russian annual consumption.

In 2009, 3.45 million tons of poultry meat were sold in Russia, and 2.5 million tons were produced. American chicken accounted for about 22 percent of the Russian poultry market in 2009 and 79 percent of all imports.
