Oscar is preceded by a lot of high -profile creative competitions that prepare the public for a grandiose movie holiday, the heroes of which become the owners of a golden figurine. Two dozen associations of American critics have already awarded their laureates. On January 17, the holders of the Golden Globes became known. Hollywood guilds of directors and producers announced the nominees. All this affects the upcoming "Oscar" layouts. On February 2, applicants for Oscar will be named in all 24 main nominations, the main of which is the “Best Film of the Year”. This year, not 5, as usual, but 10 films will participate in it. The Hollywood race has begun.
Mr. Viever
Two leaders of the race: “The Lower Spring”, which we are going to talk about separately, and the comedy of Jason Reitman “I would be in the sky” that has just come out with us is the original up in the Air. Perhaps they will eventually give in to the Avatar or “inglorious bastards”, which are still behind them in terms of the number of Pre -Shoscarian awards and nominations. But George Clooney, who played in the Up in The Air, seems to have no competitors in a dispute for the best male role of 2009.
Clooney plays a representative of a unique profession, especially in demand during the economic crisis. He - dismisses. Three hundred and twenty days a year, he flew from the city to the city to come to the next enterprise and, calling people on the list, say: “Unfortunately, your bet is reduced!” Then you need to withstand your eyes full of anger or despair, listen to the offended monologue, find for every word of comfort - and hand over the output manual. The Clooney character is not related to firms that order his parish. It’s just that the presidents of the firms do not want to do unpleasant work yourself: go, you’ll spit in the face.
Surprisingly, the basis of the first Hollywood film about the times of the crisis is the novel by the famous writer Walter Kirn, published back in 2001. But the Reitman and co -author of the script Sheldon Turner saturated the film relevant - sometimes heartbreaking - details. The hopeless monologues of the dismissed (someone has three children and a mortgage, someone has sick parents) are real monologues of real people that the Reitman recorded in Detroit and St. Louis, where the reductions were especially painful. In general, it becomes clear that people are spitting everywhere, even in America. At some point, the agency’s bosses, in which the Clooney character works, came up with a bright thought to stop spending on roads of their highly paid representatives and start firing people on the Internet online. The analogy may seem excessive, but still involuntarily think that this resembles a practical system of mass executions in death camps.
How to live without a backpack
The plus of the film “I would be in the sky”, however, that it is not about the crisis and not about unemployment. We said: this is a comedy, although sad. It is important that the main character, who, in theory, should be a burned cynic, is not a cynic at all. He is an ideologist. A supporter of a certain lifestyle. The disease is known: fear of flying by air. But Clooney’s character is only in the air, as well as airports and hotels, feels truly free and happy. His desire to become a member of a narrow club, the seventh man in the world, flew 10 million miles as a passenger, is generated not only by excitement. It gives the meaning of his life position.

He has a fear of not air - land. In the sense of: typical earthly life with all its duties and affection. When he does not dismiss, he gives the famous lectures in which the image of a backpack is important. Put everything you have in a backpack, Clooney’s character says to your listeners: a house, work, a car, a family, friends, a hobby, debts. Can I move with such a load? No. Therefore, the character Clooney has a backpack is empty: neither a family, nor a permanent mistress, nor his home (renting a room like a hotel), and all his things, including a replaceable pair of white shirts, fit into a compact suitcase on wheels.
It is impossible to imagine the best person to this role. He does not dismiss - he frees people from (often) not their favorite work, which only a backpack behind their backs is sobbing: the obligation to earn for the family and loan payment. For the Clooney character, this is a kind of mission. He really finds the words of encouragement, forcing the dismissed to look for new prospects, to recall the favorite thing that they dreamed of devoting themselves to their youth, etc. It gives people a chance to get out of the rails, according to which they would in the longing rolled to death. Therefore, of course, he is enemy No. 1 of a soulless idea to throw people overboard through the Internet. To understand the film, it is significant that the author of a soulless idea is a young employee who just wants to live with a full backpack - dreams of family and ordinary human happiness. In theory, it is she who should relate to the dismissed more humanly, but nothing like that. She is also not a cynic, just for her dismissal - what she is paid for. Nothing personal, as is now being expressed. For the character, Clooney of dismissal and conversations with people is exactly what is personal. Here the film begins to fall into a typical Hollywood edification. The author of the idea of firing on the Internet receives in full: his favorite boyfriend throws her, sending SMS.
Crisis in American
Of course, “I would be in the sky” is not a European film, although it is compared with European ones. This is an example of American cinema. The point is not that at some moment the film becomes slightly comforting and there is even a scene of a happy wedding in it, to the structure of which the hero is directly related. And not in the fact that when Clooney’s character finally overcomes the border of 10 million passenger aircraft, an elite club card at number 007, which he so longed for receiving, predictably does not give him any joy (after all, the character, again predictably, began to suffer from loneliness and excessive independence, which he achieved all his life).
The fact is that the film asks the main issues of life with the maximum American practicalism. This is not a question: "Why do we live, why are we suffering?" This is a pragmatic question: "How to live to be happy, and is happiness possible in principle?" Nevertheless, we can say that “I would be in the sky” is an American version of the “autumn marathon”. Because with all the comfort of comfort, the film still leads to the idea that there is no way out. And there is no unequivocal recipe for how to live either.
