The awards ceremony for the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Film Festival took place on Saturday evening. The jury headed by German director Werner Herzog awarded the main prize to the film “Honey” directed by Semih Kaplanoglu, and this “Golden Bear” became the first for Turkish cinema in the last 45 years.

The Best Director award went to Roman Polanski for The Ghost Writer. Thus, the jury noted the artistic merits of the film and demonstrated its position on the actions of the Swiss authorities, who are preparing to extradite the director to the United States, where he faces a prison sentence in a 30-year-old case of seducing a minor. Roman Polanski finished his award-winning film while in prison and then under house arrest in his Alpine chateau.

The best actress was named Japanese Shinobu Terajima, who played in the film “The Caterpillar,” and the prize for best actor was shared between Grigory Dobrygin and Sergei Puskepalis, who played the main roles in the Russian film “How I Spent This Summer.” In addition, the film by Alexei Popogrebsky was awarded the “Silver Bear” for the cinematography by Pavel Kostomarov.

The jury awarded the film "Together Apart" for the best screenplay by Chinese director Wang Chuanan. The special prize of the festival (the Alfred Bauer Prize for an innovative approach to cinema) and the Grand Prix of the jury were given to the film “When I Want to Whistle, I Whistle” by Romanian director Florin Serban.

The only Ukrainian film in the competition program of the 60th Berlinale was the short film “Deafness” by Miroslav Slaboshpytsky, which was left without awards (for more details, see Kommersant on February 18). Rita Rusakova
