Both sides of the Dniester remember the 1992 war differently
Today in Moldova for the first time they celebrate the Day of Remembrance of those who fell in the 1992 armed conflict for the territorial integrity and independence of this republic. The Moldovan government added a new date to the list of holidays and weekends at the end of February. And parliament declared March 2 a non-working day. Deputies from the ruling Alliance for European Integration voted for this decision. But representatives of the opposition Party of Communists argued that the very name of the holiday would harm the main goal: the return of Transnistria. Communist deputy Vadim Mishin proposed calling March 2 the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Armed Conflict on the Dniester. But representatives of the ruling alliance responded that this should be a day of remembrance of heroes, not victims. Today will begin with a service in the central capital square and will continue with rallies, patriotic education lessons in schools, as well as the laying of flowers at the “Grieving Mother” monument and the “Eternity” memorial complex.Military operations on the banks of the Dniester began in the spring of 1992. The river divided the Republic of Moldova and the Transnistrian Moldavian Republic, proclaimed in September 1990 - in response to the nationalist policies of Chisinau. The active phase of the conflict began on June 19, 1992, when units of the Moldovan army were introduced into the city of Bendery (which came under the jurisdiction of Transnistria). It was possible to stop the confrontation thanks to Russia. With her mediation, an agreement was signed in July 1992, according to which a unique peacekeeping operation with the participation of representatives of the parties to the conflict is still successfully carried out in the region.
According to the Moldovan Minister of Internal Affairs Victor Catan, 29 thousand Moldovans took part in the battles. Of these, 286 people died, and 289 remained disabled. The list of those killed in Transnistria is twice as long; there is a different date for their memory - June 19.
