In traditional Easter treatment, Pope Benedict XVI has touched today the main urgent problems of our time. He mentioned humanitarian disasters in African states and Haiti after an earthquake, the problem of drug trafficking in Latin America and Caribbean countries, called for continuing a peaceful dialogue in the Middle East and wished the governments to find solutions as soon as possible to resolve the economic crisis.
"Humanity is experiencing a deep crisis that requires great changes, a kind of resurrection. It is necessary to start with spiritual cleansing of conscience and restoration of morality," Benedict XVI said. “Easter is not a magic, does not relieve the anxieties that the church experiences, but reveals hope for the future,” he added.
The pontiff handled the message "Urbi et orbi" ("degree and the world") to thousands of believers who gathered, despite the rain, in front of the main basilic of the Catholic world. Before the ceremony on the flowers of St. Peter, the Papal Swiss Guard and Italian Carabiners, decorated with flowers, performed state hymns of Italy and the Vatican.
In conclusion, the pontiff congratulated all Christians who simultaneously celebrate Easter this year, in many languages, including Russian. "Christ is risen!" - exclaimed the pontiff.
