"The giant amount of data that is being created is already more than we can hold," Held said.

“We have already reached the zettabyte range (gigabytes trillions), and soon the Yottabyta era will come when the amount of information exceeds Yottabait, the quadrillion of gigabytes,” the professor is sure.

Jim Held explains the rapid increase in the amount of digital information by increasing the number of Internet services, the spread of mobile phones with high-quality video cameras and increased requirements of corporate information systems.

To prove his thoughts, Held has given the following examples: “Walmart (the largest US trading network) adds a billion records per minute to its databases. YouTube video service stores more data than all commercial television channels transmit for a year. A large adronian collider can generate data on a second.”

According to the analytical company IDC, the volume of the digital universe will soon reach one Zettabait - 1 180 591 620 717 411 303 424 bytes.

It should be noted that last year the volume of data stored in digital form increased by a record 62%. If you record all this information on the DVD, then the pile of the disks will reach the moon and return.

Digital content is mainly information posted on social networks, as well as photographs, music and video.

And by 2020, according to IDC, the digital universe will become 44 times more than in 2009 - the DVD pile would be half the distance to Mars.
