Russia was in 143rd in the list of peace -loving countries. This is almost the last place

Russia took 143rd place in the ranking of 149 countries of the world, depending on their peacefulness and, thus, became one of the most significant failures of this year. Last year, Global Peace Index experts put the Russian Federation on 136 out of 144.

Along with Russia, countries such as Syria, Georgia, the Philippines and Cyprus were written significantly in the ranking, it is written in the GPI report. However, it is worth noting that from these countries the Russian Federation lost the minimum number of points, compared to last year - only two. Georgia sank into three places, and the record holder was Syria, which lost 25 points at once.

Russia and Georgia are still trying to overcome the consequences of the 2008 conflict, and therefore are located in the last places in the ranking of peaceful countries of Central and Eastern Europe - in 27 and 26 places, respectively. In assessing the situation of Russia, instability in the North Caucasus also affected. Along with this, it is noted that one citizen of the Russian Federation accounts for more units of serious weapons than in most other countries.

In addition, experts in compiling the index took into account the social instability associated with the economic crisis. The most serious protest of 2009 is the protests in Vladivostok . The level of criminal activity in the country also remains extremely high. In addition, terrorist attacks, periodically occurring in the country and prepared by Islamists, do not contribute to the creation of a peaceful image of modern Russia.

Given, in general, 23 main and 33 secondary indicators, experts put Russia among the ten least peaceful countries. The Russian Federation is surrounded by Georgia, which ended up in 142 place, and Israel is 144. Iraq is called the most distant country from peace.

New Zealand, who once again confirmed its peaceful status, was recognized as the most calm and uniniting state. Iceland was in second place, and Japan closes the three leaders.

In addition, all other Scandinavian countries, as well as Austria, Ireland and Luxembourg, are located in the first ten. Most of the Western European countries were in the first half of the list: Germany in 16th place, Spain in 25, UK 31, France at 32 and Italy at 40.

The USA put experts only in 85 place in the list. Thus, this country was overtaken by countries such as China, Cuba, Libya, Gan, Sierra Leone, Chile and the UAE, Inopressa notes with reference to The Washington Post .

By definition of the inventor of GPI, Stephen Killlea, the world is a "lack of violence." “We are not striving to make moral or value judgments. We strive to measure the peace of states and determine what properties of culture and other internal structures make society peaceful,” he said in an interview with the American newspaper.

At the same time, he emphasized that "it is much cheaper to build peaceful structures in society" than to wage war and fight the manifestations of violence and cruelty within the country.
