Israel is investigating on its own

The decision on the internal investigation was made by the head of the General Staff of the Israeli army, Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi. According to the press service of this department, the commission will be headed by the reserve General Gior Iland. In the past, he is the head of the operational department of the General Staff, as well as the ex-head of the Israeli National Security Council. As noted in the press services, the commission included military specialists who did not participate in the planning and conduct of the intercept of the flotilla, which will allow to receive an independent expert opinion. As the Israeli media explain today, the Ilanda commission will not concern the issues related to political decisions, it will concentrate, first of all, on the work of intelligence. Experts under the leadership of Iland will answer the question: was there a complete picture of what was happening at the Main Flotilla, Mavi Marmara at the time the decision was made to intercept. The Ilanda Commission must submit his conclusions to the head of the General Staff until July 4. It should be noted that the decision to create a commission was agreed with the Minister of Defense of Israel Ehuda Barack. On June 7, in the Israeli parliament, Ehud Barak answered criticism, which sounded from the leader of the opposition Tsipi Livni:

- We intend to begin the investigation of what happened in such a way that, on the one hand, to express our point of view on what happened, and on the other hand, to explore two questions. The first of them: did Israel introduce the blockade of Gaza in accordance with international law? And the second: was the operation carried out in accordance with the standards of international law?

On the same day, it became known that the head of the government of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, who had previously rejected the proposal of the UN Secretary General Pan Hi Mun to create an international commission to investigate the circumstances of the operation, plans to create a state investigation commission, but still has not officially announced this. The media report that the State Commission will consist of Israeli experts in the field of international and naval law, it will also include two foreign representatives, but not as full members of the group, but as observers. One of these observers will represent the United States. At the same time, members of the commission will not receive authority to interrogate soldiers and officers who took part in the interception of Mavi Marmara. In addition, the commission will consider from a legal point of view the situation with the blockade of the gas sector and argue its legitimacy in accordance with international law. The next, fourth meeting of the narrow cabinet dedicated to this topic is scheduled for the near future, after which the decision to create a commission will be submitted for approval by the government.
