UEFA will continue experiments with arbitrators in the Champions League

With the approval of the International Council of Football Associations (IFAB) over the next two seasons, an experiment with two additional judges will continue in the three main club tournaments of UEFA.

Additional referees will be involved in the matches of the Champions League and the Europa League UEFA Seasons 2010/11 and 2011/12, as well as in the UEFA Super Cup 2010 and 2011, where the winners of these two competitions will meet.

Extended brigades will serve all the champions League matches from the playoff round and all the games of the Europa League from the group stage, which starts in September. The experiment will last until May 2012. All this time, two additional assistants will help the chief referee, linear referee and the fourth judge. They are located behind the front lines and pay special attention to what is happening in penalty areas, UEFA.com notes.

For the first time, an experiment with two additional judges was held in the fall of 2008 in the qualification of the European Championship among young men under 19 years old. After that, IFAB gave the go -ahead to continue the experiment at a professional level - for more than 200 matches of the group stage and the playoffs of the previous draw of the UEFA Europa League.

The FIFA Technical Committee also confirmed that at the next IFAB meeting in October a new technology will be discussed, which helps to determine whether the ball crosses the goal.
