It is we, mammals, who perceive the reservoir as a symbol of salvation from unbearable heat. For those who live in the water all the time: fish, mollusks, plankton, the heat is an even more terrible test. Because they have nowhere to run.
The impact of climatic anomalies on the aquatic fauna is commented by the experts of Novaya Gazeta:
Alexander Savelyev , head of the public relations center of the Federal Agency for Fisheries:
- To a greater extent, the abnormally hot weather has affected inland waters, where the temperature is kept at a level several degrees higher than normal. So, in the reservoirs where the trout lives, the water temperature in summer is usually kept at the level of 14-15 degrees. Now there are more than 20, and the fish in such conditions turns, figuratively speaking, into an ear. Moscow, Tver, Volgograd regions suffer serious losses in terms of fish. This negatively affects, of course, the fish processing plants. Statistics on losses in the industry do not yet exist and are unlikely to appear: it is too difficult to determine these same losses. As for retail prices for fish and the fish market as a whole, the heat will not affect them: the losses are not so great on a national scale.
Konstantin Zgurovsky , World Wildlife Fund:
- There are several factors that affect the reservoir and its inhabitants when the temperature rises. When the temperature exceeds the temperature tolerance limit of a particular species, the species simply begins to die. There is also an impact on reproductive abilities, i.e. to spawn, and reproduction falls. In addition, temperature changes affect habitats, such as causing blue-green algae to bloom, and the products they produce can be toxic to some fauna. Also, the pool just dries up.
Of course, the concentration of harmful substances in the water also increases, which accordingly affects the fish.
