On July 27, consideration of the criminal case initiated against the former deputy prosecutor of Ukhta Grigory Chekalin, who became known throughout Russia after his video message to the president, began. He is charged with knowingly giving false evidence.

A little background. While still a deputy prosecutor of the city, Chekalin declared at the trial of Alexei Pulyalin and Anton Korostelev (who were sentenced to life imprisonment last June on charges of arson of the Passage shopping center) about their innocence, about the pressure that was exerted on them at the investigation stage, and about the facts of falsification of the materials of the criminal case (see Novaya Gazeta, No. 111 of October 7, 2009 and No. 112 of October 9, 2009 ). At the same time, Chekalin also formulated specific accusations against high-ranking law enforcement officers involved in the manipulation of the investigation materials.

The law enforcement agencies of the Republic of Komi opened a criminal case against Chekalin in October 2009 - immediately after the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation upheld the conviction of the innocent, according to Chekalin and the editors of Novaya, which conducted its own investigation, Pulyalin and Korostelev - for life. This was a signal for the Komi authorities: Chekalin, who made the republican rubbish on public display, can be avenged. Soon, the former prosecutor, and now a lawyer, Chekalin was detained, but a few days later he was released on bail.

The process has begun. Chekalin began to defend himself in court, he was going to present evidence of his innocence and, consequently, the guilt of the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the prosecutor's office. However, on August 5, at about 3 p.m., near the building of the Syktyvkar city court, he was arrested on suspicion of fraud. The reason for the detention for 48 hours was a statement to the law enforcement agencies of a certain lady - the head of the Stroyregionservis company, Ms. Shkrum, with whom Chekalin, as the head of the legal services firm Pravezh LLC, entered into contractual relations. Prior to this, on the basis of numerous statements by Ms. Shkrum, decisions were repeatedly issued to refuse to initiate criminal proceedings. And the last such decision was canceled, which served as the basis for Chekalin's placement in the temporary detention facility.

Judge Maklakov extended Chekalin's detention for another 72 hours. After listening to the court's decision, Grigory Chekalin officially announced under the protocol that he was on a hunger strike and refused to communicate with anyone except his lawyer. And he told reporters the following: “I am not going to stop the hunger strike until the materials of this urgently initiated case are studied either by the Main Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the Main Investigation Department for the North-West. This is a pure provocation, and everyone understands this. This fraud case is just to keep me from presenting defense witnesses. And if everyone thinks that this hunger strike is so, some kind of show-off, believe me - no. Until they objectively look at what is happening, I would rather die.
