Irrational Games studio has announced a new part of the dieselpunk shooter BioShock. The game, previously known as “Project Icarus,” is called BioShock Infinite, the studio’s press service reports. The project is being developed for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and personal computer platforms. The game is scheduled for release in 2012.

BioShock Infinite, which takes place in 1912, will not be directly connected to the previous parts of the series. The game will take place from the underwater world of BioShock 2 to the airy metropolis of Columbia. Players will take on the role of former agent Booker DeWitt, who travels to a futuristic city to rescue a young girl, Elizabeth, who has been imprisoned there since childhood. The city, which was built to demonstrate to the world the triumph of technological progress and democracy, was seized by anarchy.

In order to create the floating city of Columbia, Irrational Games studio employees needed a completely new game engine. The developers also created new systems for animation and artificial intelligence of characters. To implement battles at an altitude of 10 kilometers, the authors had to revise and expand the arsenal of weapons in the game.

The first part of BioShock was released in August 2007. BioShock 2 was released in February 2010 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 consoles and personal computers. Both shooters received high marks from critics. According to GameRankings, the average rating for BioShock in the gaming press is 94 percent, BioShock 2 is 87 percent.
