Yesterday, the Levada Center posted a survey about the attitude of Khimki residents regarding the infamous forest.

Several conclusions can be drawn from this:

The majority of Khimki residents ( 82%) did not know about public hearings in the city before they took place. It was not difficult to manipulate the state employees gathered in the hall and achieve a result favorable for the builders and their confidential persons.

In fact, it is important for the vast majority of Khimki residents ( 77%) to preserve the forest; only 12% of city residents are in favor of the current version of the route, and 73% are in favor of a road bypassing the oak grove. If I were in the place of forest defenders and their sympathizers in government bodies, I would try to initiate a local referendum on the road. Even with the inevitable pressure, it would hardly be possible to get half the votes in favor of the current route.

There were already environmental plebiscites in Russia in the 1990s, then it was possible to stop the construction of a nuclear power plant in Voronezh ( not to be confused with the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant), and in 2000 or 2001. It was almost impossible to collect signatures in favor of holding an all-Russian referendum on banning the import of nuclear waste into the country. Of course, it will be very difficult, but the goal seems achievable.
