Such interest in classical wrestling among Tomsk residents is by no means accidental. This sport is actively developing in the city and region, and the tournament for the Karelin prizes gave many champions a ticket to big-time sports. Over the years, champions and Olympic medalists Murat Kardanov, Vartarez Samurgashev, Yuri Patrikeev, Alexey Mishin, Ruslan Adzhigov - the winner of the first Youth Games in Singapore - received prizes from the hands of the famous wrestler.
By tradition, the Karelin tournament brings together not only famous wrestlers. Representatives of other sports come as guests of honor. Each of these athletes has an amazing destiny. But they rarely talk about Paralympic athletes. Meanwhile, Danila Ivanov proved in practice that the impossible is possible.
Danila's father was seriously involved in freestyle wrestling and dreamed that his son, when he grew up, would follow in his footsteps. But at an early age, Danila fell ill with pneumonia and, due to the fault of doctors, lost his hearing. The father took the tragedy seriously, but decided to act against fate. He assigned the teenager to the wrestling section, to coach Viktor Kuznetsov, who nurtured Karelin. Kuznetsov developed a unique technique for Danila, thanks to which the deaf athlete won the European Championship, became a two-time world champion in freestyle wrestling and a multiple medalist at the Deaf Olympics. Ivanov was once a sparring partner for Karelin. Today he and the three-time Olympic champion switched roles. And a deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Hero of Russia helps his fellow countryman prepare for serious tournaments as sparring.
It is clear that many young wrestlers who came to Tomsk dreamed of getting an autograph from such athletes and taking a photo with them. By the way, the city is hosting the tournament for Karelin prizes for the third time. Speaking at the opening ceremony, regional governor Victor Kress said that the competition, which in terms of organization, preparation and holding is not inferior to adult championships, became a kind of catalyst and gave impetus to the development of sports in the region. Tomsk can be called a student city. The average age of residents is 35 years. In order for an active lifestyle and sports to become the norm, a special program for the construction of sports facilities has been developed in the city and region. In the near future there will be a swimming pool, a football field, an athletics arena, an ice palace with artificial ice, and in the future such “boxes” are planned to open in every district of the city. When constructing sports facilities, designers use modern technologies so that, as the regional governor puts it, they do not waste budget funds, because this is taxpayers’ money.
The next, anniversary 20th Karelin tournament will take place in a year in the homeland of the famous wrestler in Novosibirsk. The organizers promise to surprise once again. Most likely, the tournament will change its format - it will go beyond the wrestling mat, and the competition program will be replenished with other sports.
