The 86-year-old former guard of the Nazi concentration camp died in Italy

The former Nazi prison overseer Mikhail Zabert was serving in prison in southern Italy a life sentence for crimes against humanity. A few days ago he was transported to the hospital in the city of Kasert, where he died.

According to Radio Liberty , a native of Ukraine Zabert in 2000 was convicted in absentia to the Italian military tribunal, found guilty of the murder of 18 prisoners during the Second World War, when he was a guard of a transit camp in the city of Boltsano. He was extracted from Canada, where he lived after the war, to Italy only in 2008.

According to the British television and radio corporation of the BBC , Zabert admitted that he served as a guard in Boltsano, but categorically denied his involvement in the atrocities that were created there.

By the end of World War II, Bolzano began to be used as a transit camp when transferring to the north of Jews, resistance fighters and German deserters. The witnesses who took place on the case said that in the camp, Zabert to death was brewing with hunger, raped and killed a pregnant woman, and one of the inhabitants of the camp with his own hands ate his eyes.

Zabert was born in Ukraine and got a job as a guard at a concentration camp after the Nazi occupation. After the war ended, he hid this fact and emigrated to Canada in 1951.

In 2002, he was arrested at the request of the Italian authorities. His attempts to avoid extradition were unsuccessful: the Canadian Supreme Court refused to consider his complaint.

A few days ago, the Zabert was transferred to the hospital. According to the doctors, his thigh was damaged, and in addition, he had to do an emergency operation due to stomach problems. However, after the operation, the patient did not recover.
