The intellectuals are not inclined to celebrate "royal days" and namesakes. But this date, February 1, we will celebrate. Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin was born 80 years ago. No magicians could reach his hungry distant land. They were not given a visa. And the star was hidden by pitch clouds: 1931, a dispossession. But it was Yeltsin who laid the foundation for a new chronology - since August 1991, he decorated the first and, most likely, the last reformist tree in our life.

Since that terrible New Year’s Eve of 2000, when he resigned and when we, radical democrats and anti-Soviet people, found out that we were being abandoned like blind people (and we, unfortunately, turned out to be like that), and given to a “successor” who put us in a sack and drown us, 11 years have passed. GDP robbed the Christmas tree and threw it into the backyard. We have only lost 11 years and have not gained anything in this long time. And members of the Gaidar team are still swearing on the Internet about what Yeltsin did wrong and why they didn’t go to the polls separately; and on the other hand, why did Yeltsin not head the FER, then the Democrats would have taken 70% of the vote. Go and take it, there is no Yeltsin, he will not hurt! Do the right thing - we know how to do it. What's stuck? People don't listen? What more evidence is needed of Yeltsin's historical significance and his great deeds? Finally, kindness? What political opponents did he imprison, what journalists he shot, what “oligarchs” he ruined, what channels and newspapers he closed? What rallies were forbidden under him?

Yes, he chose a bad successor. But the reformers were always unlucky with their successors, and not only here, where the first scoundrel he met could deceive and bend into a ram's horn a people not ready for freedom. Alexander the Liberator was replaced by Alexander III with his regime of Russification and the callous Uvarov triad "Orthodoxy - autocracy - nationality." The reformer Julius Caesar was replaced by the cruel autocrat Octavian Augustus, and the enlightener Henry IV with his freedom of conscience and the Edict of Nantes was replaced by Louis XIII, who immediately went to conquer the Protestant La Rochelle.

So what was on our Christmas tree? The first democratic Constitution in our history shone like a golden star. We had fair elections. And don't talk about 1996 - then it was about life and death, and this was our order and our mandate: to win against Zyuganov at any cost. Well, Yeltsin won. And don't talk about 1993. Did we want to live? That, too, was our mandate: win at all costs. Well, he won. We have common sins. Except Chechnya. But there was the Khasavyurt treaty. That is how, by agreement, ended the Caucasian War and Alexander the Liberator. But then he set off to suppress Poland, in 1863-1864. And Yeltsin in January 91 supported Lithuania. By the way, we could protest against the Chechen war as long as we wanted. On any squares, including Triumfalnaya.

Also on that Christmas tree were the election of governors, independent NTV and REN TV, and the elected Council of the Federation. Freedom flowed like a golden rain: speech, conscience, meetings, unions, the press.

He gave such a kick to socialism that it is unlikely to recover. He returned Russia to us, tearing it out of the jaws of the USSR, he gave us a normal anthem and legalized the tricolor, he lowered the hated red flag. For the first time in history, an empire was destroyed by a metropolis.

Yeltsin tried to destroy Soviet reality. But she came for us and for him from nothingness, like Freddy Krueger. And our first native President left forever. And there will be no Sunday.

The next Christmas tree will have to be decorated by yourself. If the toys survive and the Christmas tree itself does not dry out.
