A Chita investigator got off with a fine for stealing a police car while drunk on New Year's Eve

The Chita court found 27-year-old Ilya Stafeev, a former police investigator for the Mogoituisky district, guilty of stealing a police car on New Year's Eve. For stealing a car for the purpose of “riding”, a policeman was fined 10 thousand rubles, the press service of the prosecutor’s office of the Trans-Baikal Territory reported on Friday.

According to the investigation, on December 31, an intoxicated policeman boarded a commuter bus, fell asleep and woke up only at the final stop outside the city. In a village unfamiliar to him, Ilya Stafeev saw an empty, running car with police license plates, got into it and drove away. Not far from Chita, near the village of Atamanovka, the car began to run out of gas. The policeman stopped at a gas station, where he was detained, Interfax writes.

A criminal case was opened against the policeman under the article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “wrongful taking of a car or other vehicle without the purpose of theft,” under which the courts issue more lenient sentences - a suspended sentence or a fine.

When passing the sentence, the court took into account the policeman’s repentance and his full admission of guilt.
