Prospects for Russian cosmonautics
On April 7, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin held a meeting on the prospects for the development of Russian cosmonautics. The Prime Minister, in particular, announced that the government had decided to establish 10 awards named after Yu.A. Gagarin (1 million rubles each), which from this year will be awarded to specialists who have made a special contribution to the development of Russian cosmonautics.
The Prime Minister noted that our country already provides almost 40% of all space launches in the world and may well increase this share by another 5, or even 10%, and also called for “more active development of such niches as space communications, telecommunications, remote research of natural resources, weather forecasting and navigation, environmental monitoring.” The Prime Minister's speech included many topics - from the creation of new space systems, including the Angara and Rus-M launch vehicles, to the preparation of plans for the exploration and development of outer space for the long term (the latter was entrusted to Roscosmos jointly with the Russian Academy of Sciences) . We are essentially talking about the development of a strategic space research program, which should replace the Federal Space Program of 2006-2015.
