In Uzbekistan, veterans of the Great Patriotic War will receive benefits on Victory Day, Fergana news agency reports . The corresponding decree was signed by the President of the Republic Islam Karimov .

Veterans will receive 300 thousand soums (about $175). The agency notes that the current benefit is significantly more than what was paid last year. Then the amount of payments by May 9 amounted to 200 thousand soums.

Benefits on the occasion of Victory Day in Uzbekistan are paid annually.

The agency notes that the authorities of the republic, while showing concern for veterans, at the same time strive to form in society an attitude towards the Great Patriotic War, which differs significantly from that accepted in Soviet times.

For example, the thesis is being introduced that Uzbekistan “participated in the war on the side of the Soviet Union” (thus emphasizing the independence of the republic). In addition, current ideologists in Uzbekistan prefer to use the phrase “World War II” instead of “Great Patriotic War” (this approach is also followed by the authors of school textbooks). According to the agency, when, for example, it was about awarding veterans from the CIS with a single commemorative medal, the decree of the President of Uzbekistan said: “To award the anniversary medal '65 years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.' participants and disabled people of the Second World War."
