Two US residents have filed a lawsuit against Apple , writes Wired . The reason for filing the lawsuit was the fact that Apple devices record the location of users without their knowledge.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Florida, Vikram Ajampur and William Devito accuse Apple of violating US law and demand unspecified compensation from the company. At the same time, they are seeking recognition of their claim as a collective one, that is, filed on behalf of all owners of iPhone smartphones and iPad tablets .

In particular, the plaintiffs note that Apple stored information about the location of device owners in unencrypted form. In their opinion, in this way, users’ personal data could become an easy target for hackers and other attackers and be used for criminal purposes.

On April 20, an entry appeared on the O'Reilly Radar blog that talked about one feature of the Apple iOS platform. It turned out that iPhone smartphones and iPad tablets equipped with a cellular communication module periodically record the subscriber’s location even when the option to transfer the corresponding data is disabled. This data is stored on the device in a system file called consolidated.db, which is copied to the computer's hard drive when synchronized with the computer.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs , who is on sick leave, personally answered this question to one of the users via email. So, Jobs wrote that “Apple doesn’t follow anyone . ”

After the discovery of the “tracking” function on users, American human rights activists and members of the US Congress sent open letters to Apple asking them to explain the principles of operation of this service and why it was created.
