In the south of India, about half a million people took part in the funeral ceremony of the Hindu spiritual teacher (guru) Satya Sai Baba.
Among those who arrived in the town of Puttaparty, where Sai Baba lived, was the Prime Minister of India Manmokhan Singh, leading politicians, cultural and sports figures.
The body of Satia Sai Baba, whose followers are considered to be millions of people in different countries, were buried in the ground. This method of burial - and not traditional cremation - is sometimes used in India in relation to religious leaders.
Sai Baba died on April 24 at the age of 84. He was known for spiritual and charitable activities, but had an ambiguous reputation - including because of rumors about sexual abuses.
