We publish a transcript of the program “Science 2.0”-a joint project of the information and analytical portal “Polit.ru” and the Vesti FM radio station. The guest of the program is the Rofessor of Magmatic Petrology and Volcanology, the Department of Petrology of the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Head of the Internet group "All about geology" Pavel shoulders . You can hear us every Saturday after 23:00 on the wave of 97.6 FM.
Anatoly Kuzichev: In our studio today, Pavel Yuryevich Plesov, who was already a guest of our program, and now there will be more, because there will be many more reasons for such meetings related to the news. So, Pavel Plesov, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Petrology of the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University. Pavel Yuryevich, good afternoon.
Pavel Plesov: Good afternoon!
A.K.: In the studio, the leading program “Science 2.0” Dmitry Iskovich, Boris Dolgin is “Polit.ru”, and the Vesti FM radio stations -anatoly Kuzichev.
Where to start? With Japan?
Dmitry Itskovich: Yes, recently, there was nothing but Japan in the news.
AK: Topic number one.
D.I.: Topic number one, and she is constantly interested in everyone.
Boris Dolgin: Accordingly, I would like to talk about this and about the reliability of information.
D.I.: About reliability. We are in such a muddy information stream, we simply demolish and introduce information about these terrible events, three in one: there is an earthquake, tsunami and a nuclear disaster. And nothing can be understood. From some sources we learn that people like people somehow live there, some kind of local misfortunes occur in them, from other sources the impression that all of Japan is melted in fire. How to understand the reality of what is happening?
B.D.: How does the scientist see the reflection of his science in the media?
P.P.: Firstly, I want to say that in Japan there is a really very large catastrophe. The magnitude of the earthquake, which was there, is estimated at 8.9, and some even at 9.0.
A.K.: This, by the way, is an important media moment, because until recently we operated on the Richter scale, and it was approximately clear. And now on the air I heard: what other Richter scale? Magnituda! Please explain, please.
P.P.: These are different things. There are a scale of the consequences of the earthquake, it is based on destruction and is measured in points.
A.K.: Is this the Richter scale?
P.P.: This is a scale that is measured in points, there are a lot of earthquakes. What is magnitude? This is an instrumentally measured force that measures with the help of devices, at the distance from this all.
A.K.: I see, but the usual scale, the point, is based on the assessment of the consequences?
P.P.: As a rule, yes. I saw many times in the news, magnitude as many points. Such news can be missed immediately.
A.K.: There are no magnitude in points ...
P.P.: This is just to the question of Dmitry, how to distinguish between correct and wrong.
A.K.: And what magnitude? What is she?
P.P.: Magnituda is a logarithmic scale, just in units.
AK: In units, that is, magnitude 7, magnitude 8, magnitude 9.
P.P.: Yes.
A.K.: But the degree of destruction of 9 points is already a scale, for example, Richter.
P.P.: Yes.
D.I.: Let's get back to magnitude 9, what does this mean?
P.P.: As far as I remember, this is not quite my area, I am still a petrologist, not a seismologist, the unit was introduced in the States when the seismographs tested. At a distance of 100 km from the epicenter of eruption - the displacement of the shooter of the seismograph into 1 division. This is one point. So, for 10 divisions - 2 points.
D.I.: A point or magnitude?
P.P.: Oh, these are units, sorry. There is such a profession - seismology, it is very serious, there is a lot of mathematics, a lot of data processing, and it is clear that when we watch the results and look for data on earthquakes, we must contact seismologists, seismological bases and seismological forecasts.
B.D.: Yes, and we will definitely turn to them.
D.I.: So, this is a very serious earthquake - magnitude 9?
P.P.: Yes.
D.I.: In comparison with what? How serious is it?
P.P.: Well, in comparison with Chilean.
D.I.: Chileskoye was also 9, as I remember.
A.K.: In general, there is a version that this is the fourth in strength for the entire observed period, an earthquake on the planet in strength. Fourth!
P.P.: Good statistics. [grinned]
A.K.: Data from Japan came about 7 thousand dead and about 10 thousand or 9.5 thousand missing. By the number of victims, this is completely monstrous.
P.P.: Yes, this is a very strong earthquake. In fact, it is surprising that there are so few victims. This is really a very good organization, really good construction, and actually from the earthquake, apparently not many people died. Most of the victims are tsunami.
B.D.: But how are the eruptions of volcanoes, which are directly in the center of your interests, earthquakes and tsunami?
P.P.: A very good question. People usually answer it for several years. Because this connection, of course, is, but the easiest way to explain it is that both of them and the other usually happen in the same place.
B.D.: And what are these places?
P.P.: There is no direct causal relationship, that is, the tsunami is the consequences of the earthquake.
B.D.: Only? In no other case, the tsunami does not arise?
P.P.: It happens. But not in any case, the earthquake produces the tsunami, there are even strong earthquakes without tsunami, but there are not very strong earthquakes that produce the tsunami.
BD: In the end, the tsunami needs large water, and the earthquake in Moscow is unlikely to beching the tsunami.
P.P.: Let me give you an example of the same Japan. In the XVIII century, the eruption of the Unzen volcano. It was a normal eruption, maybe strong. Piroclastic flows went there-these are not the actual lava flows, but this is a viscous lava, which is so viscous that it is split into pieces and something like a collapse, sat down, but only very high-temperature. Everything was relatively normal for volcanologists, but the result of this eruption is that he pounded a very weak earthquake, and this earthquake caused the collapse of a neighboring volcano, already extinct. And then half of this volcano, half of this mountain collapsed into the bay near the shimobar peninsula, which caused the tsunami. From the actual eruption, from picroxy streams, several dozen people died. But from the tsunami, in my opinion, 14 thousand people died. But such cases are unique.
If you are talking about Moscow, in principle, you can arrange in the Khimkinsky reservoir tsunami with a great desire.
AK: And will it have any destructive consequences?
P.P.: It can have destructive consequences.
D.I.: Do you need a great desire for this? What to do?
P.P.: Since the topic of terrorists, except for the theme of Japan, has not been discussed now, I would not live on the air to give such advice.
B.D.: And what are these places where the eruptions of volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunami usually occur? How are they distinguished? On what signs? Why are they just such?
P.P.: A good question again, Boris. Usually in the scientific environment it is not customary to say “good question”, because it is, as it were, an evaluative judgment. But in fact, volcanoes, earthquakes can be in completely different places. Now we are talking about Japan, and Japan is part of the island -wing system, the same as our Kamchatka, chicken. And these island -watering systems are those places where volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunami most often happen. This is due to the fact that the oceans are not arranged like continents. There are median oceanic ridges in the oceans, if we speak simplified in which oceanic slabs, oceanic lithosphere are born. Actually, cubic meters of lava are poured out every year in the median oceanic ridges, but no one sees this, because it is all at a depth of 2.5 - 3.5 kilometers. And these plates move from medium-ocean ridges. That is, they migrate, and with large speeds, it can be a centimeter per year, and as far as I know, 16 cm per year can be the maximum speed of the oceanic crust in the spreading zone.
It is clear that they need to go somewhere, they reach the edge of the ocean, and they push the continents relative to each other. For example, the Atlantic Ocean is now leaving and pushing Europe with America in different directions. But they are aging as they move, they become harder, and at some point they become so heavy that they begin to dive under the continent. This is called subduction. And these zones of subductions are a place of volcanism, earthquakes, and as a result - other disasters.
A.K.: I will once again imagine who we are talking to today. With a person who, as you can see, also issued a geopolitical forecast (although he pretends to speak about plates and earthquakes) regarding the passage of America and Europe. So, Pavel Yuryevich shoulders, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Petrology of the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University. So what did we stop at?
B.D.: We settled in the places where this happens at the site of subduction. And what is the mechanism of what is happening there?
D.I.: Can I clarify now? Are the plates get old? That is, they were young, now they are aging, but they will get younger?
P.P.: There is an activation of plates, but this is a completely different song.
D.I.: That is, this is some kind of constant, but a variable process? Either they are aging, then activated.
P.P.: No, age, unfortunately, does not decrease.
B.D.: Apparently, Dima wanted to ask if young slabs arise? That is, are new plates that are young at the time of stretching?
P.P.: Yes, the most common place where new plates arise is the medium-ocean ridges. These zones are called - Zero -Age, zero age.
D.I.: That is, a small tile may occur there.
P.P.: No, there it occurs along the entire length of the ridge. She is produced there, she will form there.
AK: Explain the mechanism, Pavel.
P.P.: What happens in medium-ocean ridges?
A.K.: No. How does a plate arise throughout the entire length? From what?
P.P.: From the mantle, this is called mantle ranges, a mantle area rises from sufficiently large depths - 600-400 km, and it begins to melt due to the fact that the pressure is reduced, and the melting temperature also decreases. These melts rise up and produce a large number of basaltes that form the oceanic bark, and the remains of melting under this bark form the oceanic lithosphere - this is the oceanic plate. On top of about 5 km of power - these are basalt and dalerites. Doleettes are, relatively speaking, basaltes that have not reached the surface. And below there may be gabbro - this is the same thing, what remains in the magmatic hearth. And below - a lithospheric mantle, that is, what remains of melting.
D.I.: Flikovaya.
P.P.: No, the mantle is not at all liquid, the mantle is solid.
B.D.: But due to pressure there is no temperature at which it can be melted.
P.P.: Yes, and now the power of this formed slab is about 80-100 km, and migrates from the ocean ridge such a plate of 80-100 km. Moreover, she migrates interestingly - she migrates unevenly throughout the entire length - these are individual plates, between which there are also transform faults. If you look at the world ocean map even in Google Earth, this is very clearly visible. The medium-ocean ridge is as if as if by these faults, like a Christmas tree, like frosty patterns such that are on the windows. These plates have a width of hundreds of kilometers, and the length they can have thousands of kilometers. They migrate. By the way, a very interesting new one, what has appeared in recent years is a satellite system with which the surface of the water is precisely measured, and due to this, you can determine the bottom relief. This is an amazing technology.
B.D.: Accordingly, the ability to evaluate changes in this relief?
P.P.: Relief changes - not yet, because long -term observations are required to averaging the surface of the water.
A.K.: But the relief itself is already clear.
P.P.: But the relief itself can be read through the water due to the fact that the gravitational constant changes a little. The higher the mountain under water, the, respectively, the larger mass, the lower the water level.
B.D.: As the years of these observations accumulated, it will be possible to follow the movements and, accordingly, to a greater extent to predict some geological processes?
P.P.: By the way, approximately the same technique, only much more accurate, is used for volcanic areas. Since this is ground, there it is not necessary to averaged. It can be seen how volcanoes are deformed before the eruptions. As, for example, Magma acts - and the relief is deformed, it begins to open.
AK: From what you said, Pavel Yuryevich, there is a feeling that it is completely predictable and understandable, the logic of the process is clear, which means that everything is absolutely predictable.
P.P.: If there is a sufficient amount of data.
A.K.: If the slabs of 16 cm per year move, it is clear that sooner or later it should be approximately clear to specialists when it, as you put it ...
P.P.: Subdates.
A.K.: When she is subdued, indeed. And what is everyone writing about now, telling? Japanese fishermen began to catch a large amount of fish, which came from the depths, which means that the legends of the XIV century say, an earthquake was soon to occur. Lord, why couldn't you turn to you, call?
P.P.: Actually, the forecast for a strong earthquake in this area has existed since 1999. Do you imagine? This plate is subdued, it was a little overgrown with sediments, that is, a little thicker than it was when it was in the middle-ocean ridge, but it is also divided into such fragments-segments, that is, it does not plunge continuously. This is not a continuous process, this process is such ... We can imagine the line of the conveyor going. Here it is continuous, but here it is still huge masses-it is a solid substance, and it happens that it also plunges with the help of these earthquakes. That is, an earthquake is the advance of this plate deep. In principle, seismologists select such keys, and their forecast is based mainly, as far as I know, on the methods of keys. They select the keys that should work. It doesn’t matter what reasons, and then they consider statistics: how often there are earthquakes on these keys, with what frequency? If it has not been for a long time, then it will be soon. And the longer it was, the stronger it will be.
D.I.: The more accumulated.
P.P.: Yes, the more energy has accumulated in essence. In the area of Japan, this subduction goes at a speed of about 9-10 cm per year, this is not the fastest place.
B.D.: But still, it is still quite noticeable.
P.P.: Yes, noticeably. Let's figure out. For 20 years (the frequency of strong eruptions on this key - about 20 years) it turns out that about two meters are accumulating. They have been waiting since 1999, which means that somewhere in 1978 or 1979 there was the last earthquake. Another meter has accumulated. Somewhere I saw the data that, due to the unloading of this key, there was a shift of about 2.5 m. That is, in principle, it is simply the arrival of the system to balance.
D.I.: And the half meter is still left?
P.P.: There were still two earthquakes today. 5.6.
D.I.: So they say that it is still not finished there.
P.P.: They say that this earthquake is unique in terms of duration. Its main phase lasted about 5 minutes - it is a lot. It began, then it grew over a minute, then still, and now ... they say that the cars jumped 50 cm. By the way, a group of petrologists returned, they were just in Japan ...
D.I.: And they were insanely happy.
P.P.: Yes, yesterday, in my opinion, they arrived, returned to Novosibirsk.
D.I.: What are they telling?
P.P.: They said that they were at the institute at that time, and when they began to shake, they managed to run out to the site, to the parking lot, and during the main phase, they looked after people and cars. People fell, could not leave the building, because they were swinging so that they could not move, and in the parking lot up to 50 cm, the cars bounced.
AK: I foresee what will happen next. Then, when the shooting of outdoor surveillance cameras will be analyzed, everyone will see that everyone is falling, cars jump, and a group of people calmly observes and records. No one will understand that these are Russian petrologists. [laugh]
P.P.: Smoke ...
A.K.: These are some mystical creatures, understand?
P.P.: The Eternal Witness is such a topic on the Internet.
D.I.: And about swelling - you talked about this American famous volcano, which everyone is afraid and which is rare ...
P.P.: Yellowstone?
D.I.: Yellowstone, yes. Is he very swollen?
P.P.: In general, yes. The fact is that when we predict the eruption, we also monitor the frequency of these eruptions, the time when it was the last time and what is happening under the volcano.
D.I.: With volcanoes the same story? That is, they gain some energy, and then realize it?
P.P.: Yelloustone, of course, is one of the volcanoes, which all scientists are watching very closely.
B.D.: How long have they been following him? About what time?
P.P.: This is the famous Yellowstone Park, there are geysers. They began to follow, I think, about 60-70 years ago.
B.D.: That is, there is a really long period of observation.
D.I.: In which state is it in the state?
P.P.: This is Wyming, in my opinion, the north of Wyming is a huge territory. Because the eruption of a volcano is thousands of cubic kilometers, this volcano. For comparison: Mount and Herens, which American schoolchildren and not only schoolchildren, consider the largest eruption in the entire history of mankind - is 1 km3.
D.I.: And this thousand.
P.P.: And this 1600. In my opinion, there was the last eruption - 1600 km3.
D.I.: That is, there are not enough chances to survive.
P.P.: Well, depending on where to be. If you are directly in the crater of the volcano, there are few chances, and if you are ...
D.I.: And if in a thousand cubic kilometers?
Bye.
П.П.: Supervoulcano.
Yes…
What is this?
D.I.: I see.
Everything is simple.
And when was it?
2.0». Thank you!
