The problem of drug trafficking will be discussed by the leaders of the G8 countries at the next summit, said the director of the Federal Service for Drug Control Viktor Ivanov. He expressed hope that it would be possible to block the route of drugs from Russia to Afghanistan. The details were told by Kommersant FM correspondent Nikita Batalov.

One of the main topics at the upcoming G8 summit will be global drug trafficking of cocaine from Latin America to the USA and Europe, and heroin from Afghanistan to Europe and Russia. The problem has reached such proportions that it is time to discuss it at the G8. According to the head of the Federal Drug Control Service, Viktor Ivanov, as a result, joint work between several countries will begin, which will bring tangible results in eliminating drug trafficking.

“The very formulation of the issue provides for a serious discussion of this problem and the development of methods to combat this phenomenon,” he said. “In recent years, Russia has become an obvious leader in the field of international anti-drug diplomacy.”

The problem is indeed more relevant than ever, but one should not expect results from the fact that it will be discussed at the G8. This is what Andrey Grozin, head of the Central Asia department at the Institute of CIS Countries, thinks. At least because NATO has been refusing to cooperate with Russia on the issue of heroin trafficking from Afghanistan for decades.

“We probably shouldn’t expect purely practical, real results in this area now,” says Grozin. “There is such a pandemonium going on in Afghanistan that the capture of drug laboratories there is now associated, to put it mildly, with a gigantic expenditure of funds. Activating this topic gives very serious PR.”

As Victor Ivanov admitted, recently the problem of the production of narcotic substances within Russia has also been growing. Thus, drugs used to prepare one of the most dangerous drugs, desomorphine, are still available for free sale in pharmacies.
