"Mirror" is not for everyone

Ivanovo promotes the author's cinema

One of the most striking films “Mirror” - “Turin horse” by Hungarian Bela Tarra “Mirror” is not for everyone. In Ivanovo, from May 23 to 29, the 5th International Film Festival was held, named after the famous film of the local native of Andrei Tarkovsky. Once again, he confirmed the reputation of a serious author’s cinema with a real danger for the Tarkovsky festival, which was almost inevitable to turn into ritual campaign about the departed genius, despite the fact that he was by no means an idol for worship, and the master whose work nourishes new artists, completely unlike him. It is not without reason that the first days of the current days recall him: from Johnny Depp, the famous captain Jack Vorobya, to Lars von Trier, who told the Cannes press conference that the origins of his new masterpiece of Melancholy must be sought in the work of the Russian director.

“The paradox is that it was in Russia that Tarkovsky for some reason began to fall out of the field of current culture,” said the new program director of the Mirror Alexei Medvedev. - But Tarkovsky is not only spirituality and metaphysics, these are still interesting formal searches. He was a man who possessed the specifics of genre cinema at the level of “Star Wars”, he was still occupied by the problem that was not fully resolved to the end: is it possible to harmoniously connect the genre and copyright cinema in one work. ”

The Mirror showed how the reality reflects what the directors of the competitive films see it - this time there were ten.

The good viewer of the Ivanovo public turned out to be not only friendly and inquisitive, but also surprisingly well prepared for a meeting with the author’s cinema. If the French “mammoth”, a sad comedy about a fat man with a thin soul traveling around France on a motorcycle, could not help but rejoice, since Gerard Depardieu played the main role, then the situation was not so simple with other films. The “Brownian movement” of the philosophizing feminist Nanuk Leopold from the Netherlands is a beautiful spectacle visually (operator Frank Van Den Aiden), but painful with his ringing void. An hour and a half of suffering of the nympho Charlotte (Sandra Huller), who is trying, in the presence of a loving handsome man and adored son, to explore his own sexuality with the help of randomly encountered men, ugly, old, but the most important thing (hello to the “day beauty” of Luis Bunuel) seemed unbearably long, but did not scare away the audience.

In Musan's Diaries, the South Korean director Pak Chun Boom spoke about the fate of the North Korean refugees in Seoul Pak Chun Boom, the director and actor of Musan's Diaries, was delighted with a sincere interest in the dramatic fate of his friend, which he transferred to the screen: his picture caused a lot of disputes. For some reason, some critics did not notice deep thoughts about the nature of evil and violence, about non-resistance, about selfishness, about a deep social split. On the contrary, they suspected the South Korean director in the propaganda of the prosperous South Korea in the reproach of the totalitarian North, although the life of refugees shown in the film is pessimistic and bleak.

Mertokan from the Turkish “majority” Serena Eugene obeys the will of parents and public opinion, throws her beloved girl, because she is a Kurdish nationality, which means that the enemy. Even worse than the “ditch” of the 44-year-old Chinese director Van Bin-about how, in the 50s, thousands of PRC citizens were sent to labor camps in the very center of the Gobi desert. In style and essence, this is the “foundation pit” of Andrei Platonov, only in the realities of Chinese history.

The total bitterness of being, embodied in the “Turin horse”, for which the Hungarian genius Bela Tarr received the main prize in Berlin looks classically perfect.

The sad image of reality is a characteristic feature of the author’s cinema, it turns out, not only in our cinema. The honesty and uncompromising of the authors, it would seem, could drive the audience into hopeless longing, but the paradox - the signs of real art do not allow to fall into despondency.

Responsive stars President of the Mirror Pavel Lungin, who replaced Inna Churikov in this post, is sure that the name of Tarkovsky serves as a password for the most star guests, they easily respond to the invitation to Ivanovo unknown to them. In previous years, Jos Stelling, Theo Angelopulos, Fei Danai came here, and this time the famous British actor Raif Fayns, Prime Minister of the Shakespearean theater, the Oscars and generally a world celebrity agreed to become the chairman of the jury.

The chairman of the jury Fains reacted incredibly responsibly to his duties. He conscientiously watched the competition with the audience, making notes in the notebook, was angry when technical failures occurred, asked the organizers about Russian directors. He was especially interested in the film “Ivanov” with Alexei Serebryakov from the Russian program “Own”. Several years ago, Fayns played a major role in this Chekhov play, and now Astrov is rehearsing in "Uncle Van" in the production of the Shakespearean Royal Theater. In Russia, he received two more proposals to participate in films in Russian classics. Pavel Lungin called him into his modern version of the “peak lady”, and Vera Glagoleva passionately dreams that Fains play Rakitin in her film adaptation of Turgenev’s “month in the village”.

The Kinoman's dream with such an interest in the cinema that was discovered in Ivanovo, it is especially annoying that the city does not have a festival center. However, it is not in Moscow. But car traffic jams and bad roads are everywhere. In Ivanovo, it was necessary to drive all day from one end of the city to another. The Governor of the Ivanovo Region, who headed the organizing committee of the festival, Mikhail Men, whose father, priest Alexander Men, once studied at the same school with Andrei Tarkovsky, promises that the infrastructure will be established. And very soon Ivanovo will become the dream of moviegoers with a real dream.
