The Spanish writer and ex-minister of culture Khorhe Semprun died

The writer and statesman of Spain Khorhe Semprun died on Tuesday evening in Paris at the age of 87, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

According to the publication, Semprun died in his house surrounded by family members. Presumably, he will be buried in France.

The future writer was born in Madrid in 1923. Semprun's father was a supporter of the Spanish Republic, and in 1939, after Franco’s victory in the Civil War, the whole family moved to France. Subsequently, Jorge Semprun returned to his homeland more than once.

Semprun wrote in French and Spanish, among his most famous works, the Long Way, the other death of Ramon Mercader, "Nechaev returned." The main topics of creativity were violence and the period of stay in the Buchenwald concentration camp, where Semprun hit the Gestapo in 1943 after the arrest of the Gestapo.

After the war, he entered the Central Committee and the Politburo of the Spanish Communist Party, but in 1964 he was excluded for anti -Stalinist speeches. In 1988-1991 he served as Minister of Culture in the Socialist Government of Spain.

Many of his works were filmed by such directors as Alain Rene, Yves Buass, Joseph Lawzi and others. Among his numerous awards, the European Literary Prize and Oscar for the script for the Greek film "Zeta" of the French director Costa-Garavas.
