Sailor Dmitry Grobov , who previously admitted that he committed actions that led to the death of 20 people on board the nuclear submarine Nerpa during testing, now denies his guilt and claims that investigators beat a confession out of him, Izvestia writes .

“On July 5, Dmitry Grobov actually declared his innocence. He categorically denies that he pressed any buttons on the control panel and has nothing to do with the release of gas,” lawyer Sergei Bondar, who is defending the second defendant in the case, the commander of the nuclear-powered ship Dmitry Lavrentyev, told the publication.

Grobov stated in court that after the incident on the submarine he was illegally deprived of his freedom, put under round-the-clock guard, not allowed into his family and kept without a lawyer.

“Commander Dmitry Lavrentyev generally said from the first day that he doubted Grobov’s guilt. And what can I say: the investigation did nothing to find out the degree of Grobov’s guilt. No timeline of events was compiled, fingerprints were not taken,” said lawyer Bondar.

The first hearing in the Nerpa case took place on June 28.

On the submarine "Nerpa" on November 8, 2008, during sea trials in the Sea of Japan, the fire extinguishing system was activated without permission, and a mixture of freon and tetrachlorethylene began to flow into the compartments. As a result, 20 people died, another 21 people were hospitalized with poisoning.

The media reported that the system could have been activated by sailor Grobov. After this, charges were brought against the commander of the Nerpa, Lavrentyev, and the bilge operator Grobov .
