The council of the city of Launceston, located in the Australian state of Tasmania, will consider the issue regarding the operation of the local clock tower. The fact is that at night the clocks chime too loudly and, according to the owners of nearby hotels, they disturb tourists’ sleep. According to ABC News, the council must decide whether to turn off the chimes at night.

The loud chiming of the tower clock in Launceston was talked about a few days ago. Council member Ivan Dean approached the council with a proposal to temporarily turn off the device (from 23:00 to 6:00). He explained this idea by the need to take into account the interests of tourists who, unlike local residents, are not accustomed to the striking of clocks.

The council heard Dean's views, but officials said a final decision on the fate of the chimes would be made only after consultation with the community.

According to representatives of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, the majority of residents are against turning off the clocks. At the same time, department officials note that hotel owners needed to take care of the problem of sound insulation in hotel residential areas in advance.

There is no word on how soon the council and the people of Launceston expect to conclude the clock case.

The clock tower was built in the city more than a hundred years ago. The clock strikes every fifteen minutes. The construction is maintained by the city committee of clocks and chimes.
