Bangkok can go under water by the 2030s

Day after day, Bangkok is drowning: according to the most pessimistic expert estimates, part of the capital of Thailand can plunge under water in the 2030s, writes Le Monde . The combination of a number of natural factors - changes in the climate, increasing the sea level, erosion of the coast and settling of clay soils - coupled with the lack of policy that can prevent disaster, doom the city to death.

A significant part of the metropolis is already below the sea level, more than a million houses, 90% of which are residential, are threatened due to an increase in sea level. In the case of a deterioration in the situation, the first floors of buildings can turn into a swamp for several months.

Residents of the port of Samunt Prakan, located a few kilometers from Bangkok, have been living in houses partially flooded with water for several months. The expert of the National Center for the Prevention of the Natural Disasters Smith Dharmasaroi predicts that by 2100 Bangkok will become another Atlantis, and if the government does not take any measures, this may happen by the 2030s. In his opinion, it is necessary to build a giant dam along the Gulf of Siamese.

The Oceanographer Abnond Snidwings, in turn, believes that the flooding period is impossible to predict, and the construction of a dam or attempt to stop the erosion of the coast is useless. A more thoughtful urban planning policy is needed to combat floods, he believes.

Urbanism specialist Niramon Kulsrismubat confirms that floods are a natural phenomenon for Bangkok, built on marshy soils 1.5 meters below the sea level. Previously, numerous channels and fields absorbed floods, however, during the urbanization process, many houses were built on lands that had previously absorbed water, the newspaper writes.
