The head of the press service of the President of the Republic was killed

Garun Kurbanov, head of the information-analytical department and press service of the President of Dagestan, was killed in Makhachkala. His driver Ismail Ismailov died along with him.

The crime was committed today around 8:30. The official left his house on Mantasheva Street and was heading towards the official Toyota Camry when a silver VAZ-2114 caught up with him. According to preliminary information, an unknown person opened fire from a machine gun without leaving the car. Mr. Kurbanov and his driver died from their injuries on the spot. The “Interception” plan put into effect in the first hours after the murder did not produce results.

49-year-old Garun Kurbanov was appointed head of the information policy and press service of the President of the Republic of Dagestan on March 1, 2010.

Before that, from 2000 to 2004, he was the chief specialist of the North Caucasus Territorial Administration of the Russian Ministry of Press, Television and Radio Broadcasting and Mass Communications. In 2003, he was appointed general director of the state institution RGVK "Dagestan". Mr. Kurbanov, in fact, came up with the idea of creating such a company of republican subordination. In October 2008, he was appointed Minister of National Policy, Information and External Relations of Dagestan.

According to the regulations, the department of information policy and press service is an independent division of the President of Dagestan, operating under the leadership of the head of the republic. The main objectives of the department are to ensure the implementation by the President of the Republic of Dagestan of his constitutional powers in the field of information policy; ideological support and ensuring coverage of the activities of the president, chairman of the government, secretary of state of the Republic of Dagestan, as well as deputy prime ministers in the media, “formation, with the help of the media and outreach work with the population, of an objective public opinion about the activities of the president, prime minister, secretary of state and their subordinates” .

The investigative bodies of the Investigative Committee for Dagestan have opened a criminal case on the grounds of crimes under Part 2 of Art. 105 (“Murder”) and Part 2 of Art. 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Illegal trafficking in weapons”). The leadership of the Investigative Committee decided to transfer the criminal case for further investigation to the main investigative department of the department for the North Caucasus Federal District.

The investigation is considering all possible versions of the crime committed, with the priority being the official activities of Mr. Kurbanov.
