The tent city that supporters of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko set up in the center of Kyiv to protest her arrest will not be demolished. The lawyer of the former prime minister, Sergei Vlasenko, said this in an interview with the Ekho Moskvy radio station.

According to him, the court's decision to ban both supporters and opponents of Yu. Tymoshenko from holding mass events on Khreshchatyk will come into force no earlier than 10 days later, unless an appeal is filed. S. Vlasenko also clarified that the reception of citizens, which is carried out by people’s deputies in tents, also does not contradict today’s court decision.

On the morning of Sunday, August 7, the police blocked Khreshchatyk, the central street of Kyiv, with additional barriers to separate supporters of Yu. Tymoshenko from opponents of the former prime minister gathering near the tent city.

The night before, the Kiev City State Administration filed a lawsuit with the District Administrative Court of the city demanding a ban on the protest against the arrest of Yu. Tymoshenko, who was taken into custody on August 5, 2011. At the same time, the Kyiv court did not allow the demolition of the tent city, since the tents are reception rooms for people's deputies, where citizens are received around the clock.

Representatives of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc set up several tents near the Pechersk court, where the “gas case” is being heard, and near the pre-trial detention center in Lukyanovka, where Yulia Tymoshenko is placed. In the tents, according to representatives of the opposition, citizens are being received by deputies from BYuT. In this way, the opposition hopes to circumvent the requirement to obtain permission for mass protests.

Let us remind you that on August 5, the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv changed the preventive measure against Yu. Tymoshenko from a written undertaking not to leave the place to an arrest. The court accused the former prime minister of violations that prevented the truth from being established in the trial.

Yu. Tymoshenko is accused of concluding an illegal agreement between NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine and OJSC Gazprom in 2009. If the former prime minister is found guilty, she faces up to 10 years in prison. At the same time, the prosecutor’s office emphasizes that Yu. Tymoshenko does not have the opportunity to avoid a real sentence by replacing it with a suspended sentence.

Moscow has already stood up for the leader of Batkivshchyna. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that “all gas agreements of 2009 were concluded in strict accordance with the national legislation of the two states and international law, and the necessary instructions from the presidents of Russia and Ukraine were received for their signing.” The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the trial of Yu. Tymoshenko must be fair and impartial.
