Claudio Ranieri has been appointed the new head coach of Inter Milan. In this post, he replaced the most unlucky coach in the history of the Milan team - Gian Piero Gasperini. Ranieri is tasked with repeating what he did the season before last with Roma, which he also accepted in distress and with whom he almost won the Italian championship.

Inter Milan, CSKA's rival in Group B of the Champions League (the Italians will play the army team in Moscow on Tuesday), was left without a head coach for just 24 hours. On Tuesday, Inter lost to Serie A newcomer Novara with a score of 1:3, and on Wednesday, club president Massimo Moratti fired Gian Piero Gasperini, who can now be considered the most unlucky coach in the club’s century-long history. After all, in five matches under Gasperini, Inter lost four times and drew once. All previous Milanese coaches won at least one match.

The place of Gian Piero Gasperini, as expected, went to Claudio Ranieri. The contract with him was signed until the end of June 2013. The club hopes that Ranieri will be able to repeat what he managed in the 2009/10 season. Roma then found themselves in a situation similar to the one Inter currently find themselves in. The Romans also started the championship unsuccessfully, the head coach (Luciano Spalletti, now working with Zenit) left the team, and the team’s prospects seemed very dismal. Not to say that after Ranieri was appointed to the coaching post, Roma began to show a fantastic game, but it gave results. The Romans had a streak of 23 matches without defeat, and only a lack of luck did not allow them to rise above second place and overtake Inter, where Jose Mourinho was then in charge.

In his new position, Claudio Ranieri, as he himself said, intends to first of all have a heart-to-heart talk with the players to find out what is going wrong. “Inter are well-equipped, but the players are not showing what they are capable of,” said Claudio Ranieri. “We need to find out why. It would be stupid to blame only Gasperini for the problems. He is a qualified coach who tried to rebuild the team’s game according to his vision, under the scheme using three defenders. It worked for him before, but now it doesn’t work out. My task is to return some enthusiasm to the players, so that they remember how they can play.”

Claudio Ranieri refused to assess the chances of his team, which won the Champions League less than a year and a half ago and is now trailing at the bottom of the Italian Championship standings, to return to its usual rhythm. “I can be said to be a fatalist. It will be as it will be. In any case, I won’t promise that we will win this or that. But the team has potential, and this is obvious.”

Let us note that during his coaching career, Claudio Ranieri, who is generally considered one of the top coaches (in addition to Roma, he worked with Fiorentina, Chelsea, Valencia, and Juventus), very rarely won trophies. Actually, he has three of them - the Italian Cup and Super Cup with Fiorentina in 1996 and the Spanish Cup with Valencia in 1999.
