Spain agreed to participate in NATO missile defense, and American ships equipped with interceptor missiles will be located within the country. According to ITAR-TASS, this was announced on Wednesday at a press conference in Brussels by the head of the Spanish government Jose Luis Rodriguez Sapatero.

According to him, four ships equipped with the EGIS system will be located since 2013 on the basis of the US Navy in a company near Cadiz in southern Spain. "An agreement with Spain indicates that the United States continues to contribute to the NATO system and cooperation with European partners, despite budget problems," said US Minister of Defense, Leon Panetta.

The US administration also appeared on Wednesday: the US Navy ships equipped with the AEGIS anti-aircraft missile system will be based on the elements of the American OM system in Europe in the Mediterranean Sea on the Coast of Spain.

As explained, the prepared plan will facilitate ensuring the constant presence of ships equipped with AEGIS air defense systems in the Mediterranean Sea in accordance with the intentions of Washington, as well as their access to the eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean. Such ships will be based in the company (Cadiz Province, the South Coast of the Mediterranean Sea), representatives of the US government said. According to them, it is planned to officially announce the agreements reached between Washington and Madrid later today at the headquarters of the organization of the North Atlantic Treaty in Brussels.

In March of the United States, engaged in the implementation of the first stage of the adjusted plan for placing the elements of its system (PRO) in Europe, Montery missile cruiser was sent to the Mediterranean Sea, equipped with AEGIS air defense systems.

Earlier, Türkiye, Poland and Romania announced the participation in the system about the system.
