The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for the opening of quasicristals

The Nobel Committee awarded the 2011 Prize in the field of chemistry, Daniel Shechtman became “for the opening of quasicristals”. This was announced during the press conference.

Daniel Shekhtman is a scientist from the Technion, the Israeli Technological Institute (Haifa).

Quasicrystals are one of the forms of organization of the structure of solid bodies. They have symmetry axes prohibited for ordinary crystals.

The first quasicristal Daniel Shekhtman discovered in 1984 - it was an aluminum alloy with manganese, the atoms of which were located in quasi -evex structures.
