The Ministry of Justice proposes to tighten control over international agreements concluded by Russian regions, and on Thursday published on its website draft amendments to the law “On the coordination of international and foreign economic relations.”

The amendments, in particular, provide for a significant increase in departments with which regional authorities must coordinate draft international agreements.

According to the current law, the project is submitted only to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . Now, if the amendments are approved by the State Duma , this list will include the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Regional Development, the Ministry of Economic Development and other federal departments. In addition, the period for approval of draft agreements is extended from 20 to 30 days.

This year, President Dmitry Medvedev, in several of his keynote speeches, said that the regions should receive more powers. In July, Medvedev instructed governors to prepare proposals to reduce the powers of the federal center .
