Defender of Defenders

On October 27, film director Sergei Govorukhin, son of film director Stanislav Govorukhin, author of films about modern wars in Russia, died of a cerebral hemorrhage.

He was 50 years old. Govorukhin Jr. participated in combat operations in Tajikistan, Chechnya, Afghanistan and Yugoslavia as a war correspondent. In February 1995, he was wounded in Grozny, as a result of which he lost his leg.

In 1996, Govorukhin created the Regional Public Organization of Disabled Veterans of Interregional Conflicts in Tajikistan and Chechnya. He served as Chairman of the Rokada Foundation for Veterans and Disabled Persons of Armed Conflicts. He was a member of the Presidential Council for the Promotion of Civil Society and Human Rights.

Sergei Govorukhin’s last film, “Land of People,” was released a few days before his death.
