Members of the Greek government submitted their resignations to Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou on Tuesday. reported this on Wednesday Reuters .

Papandreou today held another emergency cabinet meeting, during which ministers continued discussions on the composition of the coalition government. An agreement in principle between the main political forces of the country on its formation was reached last Sunday, November 6. The ruling center-left PASOK party and the opposition center-right New Democracy party will coordinate efforts to speed up the procedure for receiving EU financial assistance.

Papandreou agreed to resign on Monday night. He had already said goodbye to his subordinates.

The Socialists and Democrats, however, still have not agreed on all positions in the coalition cabinet. The name of the new prime minister, according to sources, should be announced by midnight Tuesday. Among the candidates for the position were former Deputy Chairman of the European Central Bank Lucas Papadimos and the current European Ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros, as well as Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos.

European Commission Vice-President Olli Rehn said on Tuesday that Athens could receive a sixth tranche of EU and IMF foreign aid worth €8 billion in November if the new government guarantees implementation of economic reforms and a program of deep public spending cuts. If there is a delay in receiving funds, Greece will have to default on its national debt of €360 billion in the second half of December.

At the same time, Brussels demanded from the country's leadership written guarantees of compliance with the terms of the agreement on the provision of financial assistance. The document, according to EU creditors, should be signed by Papandreou and Venizelos.

The political crisis has already forced the Greek authorities to call early parliamentary elections. According to preliminary information, they will take place on February 19 next year.
