General Director of Hewlett-Packard Meg Witman confirmed the presence of problems with hard disks in the market. Commenting on the financial results of the company over the last quarter, Whitman said that Google and Facebook asked for Hewlett-Packard to help with hard disks, since it is becoming more and more difficult to buy them in the open market every day.
The fact is that HP and other server manufacturers, such as Dell or IBM, have direct agreements with manufacturers such as Saegate Technology and Western Digital, and this allows them to receive discs in priority.
Significantly worse things are from retail buyers of discs, who either now cannot buy drives from traditional sellers, or are forced to do it twice or three times more expensive than usual, CyberSecurity.ru reports.
The situation looks even sadder for large Internet companies, such as Facebook or Google, which personally design servers and purchase components themselves for them.
The current shortage of hard drives is caused by a massive stop after the strongest flood over the past half a century in Thailand, where almost 60% of the hard drive plants are located.
Earlier, Seagate and Western Digital warned that some of the factories were severely damaged by the flood, the other part was stopped due to damage to the auxiliary infrastructure, in particular power lines.
Whitman says that her companies immediately after the ads of the manufacturers had to operate extremely quickly. The company created an operational headquarters, which analyzed the stocks of hard drives in the HP and analyzed the possibilities to replenish it, since the problems in the industry may persist for several months until the manufacturers are completing production and uninterrupted supply.
"I personally talked on the phone with all our main suppliers of hard drives and logistics partners," the head of the HP said. According to Whitman’s forecast, if there are no additional difficulties in the industry, then about two more quarters will be saved with deliveries.
Meg Whitman took her current post two months ago, reminds RIA Novosti . Her predecessor Leo Apotketer held the post of head of the HP for less than 11 months. This period cannot be called successful for the company. During the leadership of the Apotector, the cost of HP shares has almost doubled.
According to the analytical company IDC, HP, despite the current stagnation, occupies a leading position in the global PC market. However, since the beginning of the year, the company's shares have lost more than a third of the cost on the New York Stock Exchange. At the closure of trading on Monday, the HP shares were estimated at $ 26.86, and market capitalization at $ 53.4 billion.
