The court in Kyiv arrested Tymoshenko indefinitely, her lawyer said

Today it became known that the ex-Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko, already convicted of seven years of conclusion for abuse of powers when signing gas contracts with Russia, was arrested in the next criminal case for an unlimited term.

The visiting meeting of the Shevchenkovsky District Court of Kyiv in the case of the activities of the Corporation “Unified Energy Systems of Ukraine” (EES) lasted twelve hours in the medical part of the Lukyanovsky pre -trial detention center. For several weeks, the former prime minister has been chained due to severe back pain, however, according to the authorities, the state of health is not critical.

During the court session on December 8, it was decided to arrest the ex-Prime Minister for an unlimited period, said, quoting the court decision, her lawyer Sergey Vlasenko:

“To elect Tymoshenko Yulia Vladimirovna, a measure of restraint in the form of capture and further maintain it in the Kiev pre-trial detention center. We are not talking about any specific term. Timoshenko was detained forever.”

Last month, law enforcement agencies united four criminal cases in one proceeding, which relate to the work of Tymoshenko as the President of the EES in the second half of the 1990s. She is charged with the concealment of foreign exchange earnings, theft of the funds of the state budget and tax evasion.

According to Tymoshenko’s associates, now President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, confident that his main opponent will remain behind bars for a long time, is ready to fulfill the requirements of the West and, it is likely that the court of appeal may be canceled by Yulia Timoshenko’s “gas case”, Radio Liberty correspondent Vladimir Ivakhnenko reports.
