The German parliament decided to check whether the EU reform promoted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy contradicts the German constitution, Agence France-Presse reports, citing Spiegel magazine .

According to the Chairman of the Bundestag, Norbert Lammert, the prospect of intervention by the European Commission or the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Issues in the country's national budget raises doubts.

In addition, the plan for EU reforms proposed at the EU summit in Brussels seems “very ambitious” to German MPs. However, the Bundestag hastened to assure that they are not trying to disrupt the reforms in this way.

The initiators of changes to the EU treaty were Germany and France. They demanded, in particular, the introduction of automatic sanctions for countries exceeding the budget deficit established in the EU. Great Britain sharply opposed the new union treaty at the summit in Brussels. She demanded that she be given the right to veto any EU decision regarding financial regulation.

Hungary did not support the changes either. Two more EU countries - the Czech Republic and Sweden - decided to consult their parliaments before giving a final answer on this matter.

France and Germany will also be satisfied with a limited version of the agreement on financial stability and regulation, which will not apply to all EU countries, but only to the eurozone. This option is not excluded if EU states cannot reach a compromise.
