Members of the LDPR at the congress on December 13 nominated their leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky as the party's candidate for the presidential election. Previously, he stated that he would vote against his candidacy at the congress so as not to be elected unanimously.

The XXIV LDPR Congress is taking place in the Forum Hall on Paveletskaya, RIA Novosti reports. The main issue on the agenda is the nomination of a candidate for President of the Russian Federation from the LDPR. The Russian presidential elections are scheduled for March 4, 2012. At its congress on November 27, the ruling United Russia nominated the party leader, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, as its candidate. “A Just Russia” nominated its leader Sergei Mironov at the congress on December 10. The Communists have also already announced their intention to participate in the presidential elections. According to the first deputy chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Ivan Melnikov, the nomination of a candidate from the Communist Party will take place at the party congress on December 17; it is expected to be the leader of the Communists, Gennady Zyuganov. In addition, the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation receives notifications from initiative groups for self-nomination of candidates for the post of President of Russia. Among them, oppositionist Eduard Limonov, as well as ex-mayor of Vladivostok Viktor Cherepkov, announced their intention to run for the highest government position. Also on Monday, 46-year-old Mikhail Prokhorov, who ranks third on the list of the richest people in Russia with a fortune of about $18 billion, announced his intention to run for president of Russia in March 2012.

Zhirinovsky nominated as a presidential candidate
