The used car market in Russia decreased by 4%

ITAR-TASS More and more people in Russia prefer to buy new cars. In 2011, the domestic used car market fell by 4.3%. The drop was most severe for local brands and the Ukrainian ZAZ. But among foreign brands, growth was demonstrated by Citroen, Chrysler and Dodge, as well as Mazda, Ford and Volkswagen - they are most often purchased on credit.

The used car market in Russia is shrinking. The analytical agency Autostat reports this in its annual report. According to the study, in 2011 the secondary car market fell by 4.3%, or 160,122 vehicles, compared to 2010.

“The decline in the secondary market and, first of all, in the segment of domestic cars is caused by a reduction in their fleet due to disposal. Moreover, the older the model, the greater the reduction in the secondary market for it. This is especially true for discontinued models,” Sergei Udalov , executive director of Autostat, commented on the rating results .

Resales of foreign brands, on the contrary, grow as their fleet increases, with the greatest growth occurring in models with rapidly growing fleets.

Despite a drop of 16%, Lada ranks first in sales among brands. In 2011, 1.24 million cars of this brand were resold (compared to 1.48 million in 2010). Models from the Togliatti Automobile Plant occupy the first seven lines in the ranking of the best-selling cars on the used market.

The top ten took first place - 145,895 VAZ-2110s were sold in 2011 versus 163,002 cars in 2010. Sales of other domestic brands declined more strongly. In 2011, 80,687 GAZ cars were sold against 110,617 last year (a drop of 27.1%), the UAZ secondary car market fell by 18.1% (32,636 in 2011 against 39,939 in 2010), Moskvich cars (former AZLK) 16,791 were resold versus 31,801 in 2010 (-47.2%).

The Ukrainian brand ZAZ lost 32.3%: 6,391 people bought used products from the Zaporozhye Automobile Plant compared to 9,392 last year.

Toyota became the leader among foreign brands. In the secondary market, the concern lost 1.7% compared to last year, and the best-selling model of the Japanese brand was Corolla. Of the 440,101 vehicles resold, 81,998 were Corollas, and in the luxury segment, the best-selling model was the Toyota Land Cruiser SUV.

Citroen showed the strongest growth. Models of the French brand were sold on the secondary market by 37.7% more than last year - 12,740 units versus 9,259. Dodge cars were sold 8,730 (+27%), Chrysler - 7,496 (+29.2%).

Luxury cars also showed growth throughout 2011. Infiniti's sales increased the most - by 23.6% (7,714 cars). Analysts also recorded an increase in resales of Land Rover, BMW and Mercedes. The leader in the number of luxury cars sold on the secondary market was Audi - 76,302 cars.

Along with the general decline in the market for secondary cars, the number of car loans for their purchase has increased. According to experts from the Formula 91 auto market, the most popular brands and models of used cars that are bought on credit are Ford Focus, Mazda3, Mazda6, Opel Astra, Opel Zafira, Volkswagen Passat, Hyundai Grand Starex, Mercedes Sprinter and Volkswagen Transporter.

Based on the results of 2011, the average lending period was five years, with the size of the down payment ranging from 0% to 10% when purchasing personal vehicles and from 30% to 40% when purchasing commercial vehicles.

At the same time, the age of cars purchased on credit has decreased. If last year they took out a loan to purchase models produced in 1999, now they mainly purchase cars produced in 2003–2009.
