Giant tuna sold for a record 728 thousand dollars at auction in Tokyo

The new price record was set at the first auction in the wholesale fish market of Tsukidzi in Tokyo - tuna weighing 269 kilograms for 56.49 million yen (about 728.1 thousand US dollars), Kyodo said on Thursday.

The holder of the giant fish became the operator of the Sushi restaurant network Kiyomura Co. The price for one kg of the “record holder” amounted to about $ 2.7 thousand dollars. The amount paid by the buyer exceeds last year’s record by almost $ 290 thousand, RIA Novosti reports.

“I wanted to revive Japan, given that the country is suffering from the consequences of last year’s March catastrophe and economic stagnation,” Kiyomura Co Kimur, head of Kiyomura Co, commented on the acquisition.

Bidders consider such a major deal at the very beginning of the year a good sign against the backdrop of an economic recession in the country, falling consumption and the situation in the restaurant business, the agency notes.
