The US Department of Defense has developed a plan to reduce the military's energy spending. This was reported on the website of the country's military department.

According to US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta , the department needs to reduce fuel costs not only to save money, but also to reduce dependence on foreign fuel suppliers.

According to information from the Pentagon website, the US Army intends to acquire 16 Net Zero installations by 2020, and 25 such installations by 2030. The concept of Net Zero implies that an object consumes less energy or water, or the same amount as it produces. Garbage at such facilities must be recycled.

The US Navy intends to reduce fuel consumption by 15 percent by 2020. Air Force - to increase the energy efficiency of aviation by 10 percent within the same time frame. The Marine Corps plans to increase energy efficiency in combat by one and a half times by 2025. Thus, the daily fuel consumption per Marine will be reduced by 50 percent.

The main goals of the energy reform are to increase energy security at real estate facilities of the armed forces, introduce alternative fuels, and introduce standards to reduce the energy dependence of units.

According to Assistant Secretary of Defense Sharon Burke, the United States is already gradually implementing plans for energy efficiency of the armed forces. Thus, troops in Afghanistan are successfully using solar panels, and the US Army has purchased more energy-efficient generators.

"Energy security is imperative. Our economic well-being and international interests depend on it," Panetta said.

In total, the Pentagon intends to reduce military spending by $487 billion over the next ten years.
