Ukraine is counting on cooperation with Turkmenistan on the development of the fuel and energy complex; in particular, it would like to participate in the development of fields and transportation of local natural gas. This was stated by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych during negotiations between the leadership of the two countries, Zerkalo Nedeli reports.

According to him, there is potential in the fuel and energy complex of Ukraine that can be tapped by Turkmenistan. In particular, we are talking about the supply of equipment to certain fields.

Among the projects interesting to Ukraine, Yanukovych highlighted the construction of the second line of the Malay-Bagtyyarlyk gas pipeline, which is part of the route from Turkmenistan to China. In addition, Ukraine could participate in the construction of the East-West gas pipeline, which would transport gas from Turkmenistan to India through Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Ukraine is also interested in modernizing the 5th power unit of the Mary power plant. Now Kyiv is supplying equipment for the project.

Finally, Yanukovych noted that he considers the idea of building the Caspian-Black Sea gas pipeline system promising and announced the readiness of Ukrainian enterprises to participate in the project. Earlier, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov spoke about the need to develop this system .

In general, according to Yanukovych, trade turnover between the countries has been growing rapidly recently. In 2011, it tripled to $1.2 billion.

Ukraine is now completely dependent on Russian gas imports. Kyiv, however, is seeking to diversify supplies, considering Ashgabat as one of the most interesting suppliers. Supplies of Turkmen gas to Ukraine under agreements between the two countries ceased several years ago.
