The US Army has launched an investigation into evidence that military doctors refused to confirm a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder , presumably to save money on treatment. This as reported by Reuters . was stated by US Secretary of the Army John McHugh,

As it turned out, doctors at the Lewis-McChord military base in Washington state canceled this diagnosis for 40 percent of the military personnel whose health status was studied. The diagnosis in all these cases will now be reconsidered.

Staff Sergeant Robert Bales served at Lewis-McChord Base. While on assignment in Afghanistan, he allegedly left his unit and shot and stabbed to death 16 Afghan civilians in two villages, including nine children. This was his fourth trip to a hot spot. Before that, he had been to Iraq three times, where, according to press reports, he suffered a concussion and lost part of his foot, but was still sent to Afghanistan.

According to CNN, there is no evidence that Bales was ever diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. At the same time, his lawyer has already stated that he intends to raise the question of the possibility of his client receiving such a diagnosis during the trial.
