The international consulting company Knight Frank and Citi Private Bank on Wednesday presented their sixth report, The Wealth Report 2012 . Experts annually count the number of people who own liquid assets worth $100 million or more—the so-called centa millionaires.

Asia is coming

According to the results of a study by Ledbury Research, as of the fourth quarter of 2011, there were 2,100 citizens living in Russia who met this criterion. In total, there are 63,000 such people in the world - 29% more than five years earlier. Centa millionaires have total assets of $39.9 trillion.

Over the past five years, the number of rich people has increased by 29%, and over a 10-year period, by 2016, it will increase by another 37% - up to 86,000 people, the report's authors predict. The Asia-Pacific countries remain the main driver of growth. The number of centa millionaires in South and Central Asia has increased by 200% (to 3,000) since 2006, and by 80% (to 18,000) in Southeast Asia.

The stratum of wealthy citizens in the Middle East has doubled - up to 2,000 people. Latin America showed a 67 percent increase (up to 5,000), and Eastern Europe showed a 50 percent increase (up to 3,000). The least dynamic region was North America, where the number of multimillionaires stabilized at 17,000 people and increased by only 6% over the past five years. There were no more rich people on the African continent (1000). Europe turned out to be the only point on the map where there were fewer centa-millionaires - their number decreased by 7%, to 14,000.

According to expert forecasts, the emerging dynamics will continue in the next five years. Southeast Asia will continue to strengthen its status as the region most densely populated with centa-millionaires: by 2016 their number will grow to 26,000 (+44% compared to 2006). For comparison, North America will reach 21,000 over the same period (+24% over 10 years).

At the same time, the United States will remain the leader among states: China, with 14,000 centa-millionaires in 2016, will still lag behind America with its 17,000, Knight Frank and Citi suggest. Russia will add 76% in the number of wealthy citizens in 10 years.

Experts state that the centa indicator reflects the global trend of growing economic influence of the East and weakening of the West.

The report predicts that by 2020 China will overtake the United States in terms of GDP, and by 2050 India will become the world's largest economy with a GDP of $86 trillion (in 2010 - $3.92 trillion) versus China's $80 trillion ($9.98). trillion) and $39 trillion for the United States ($14.12 trillion).

Russia will be in seventh place: the country's GDP will grow from $2.2 trillion to $7.77 trillion. The Russian Federation will be behind such countries as Indonesia ($13.93 trillion), Brazil ($11.58 trillion) and Nigeria ($9.51 trillion).

According to the forecast, the most positive average annual dynamics of economic growth will be demonstrated by Nigeria (8.5%) and India (8%), the most modest - Sweden (1.9%) and Japan (1%).

In terms of the share of GDP per capita, Singapore will retain its leadership (the figure will rise to $138,000 from $56,500 in 2010). It will be followed by other “Asian tigers” - Hong Kong ($116,600) and Taiwan ($114,100).

The contribution of leading European economies to global GDP by 2050 will dramatically decrease from 41% (in 2010) to 18%, while the share of developing Asian powers, on the contrary, will increase from 27% to 49%, experts predict.

Multimillionaire optimism

The report defines high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) as individuals holding liquid assets worth more than $25 million. The results of a globally representative survey of this category showed that the rich remain optimistic: less than a quarter of respondents are afraid of losing their capital.

At the same time, HNWIs recognize the inevitability of processes of redistribution of world resources against the backdrop of a growing number of citizens dissatisfied with existing social injustice. An indicator of these sentiments in 2011 were numerous protests, including those under the slogan “Occupy Wall Street,” the report’s authors describe.

Multimillionaires see global economic problems as the key threat to their personal fortunes—this point was noted by 91% of respondents. 61% fear local financial cataclysms, 54% fear destabilization of the political situation. Terrorism is considered a risk by only 6% of respondents. Finally, 2% of HNWIs do not exclude the influence of climate conditions on their capital. A distinctive feature of Russian HNWIs is the fear of a hostile takeover of the business by the state.

According to the results of the study, the position of the leading international financial centers (IFCs) will remain stable. By 2050, capital and investment will continue to be primarily attracted to London and New York. Hong Kong will lose its status as the third most influential financial capital of the world - Beijing will take its place.

Multimillionaires expect MFCs to meet criteria such as personal security, economic stability and social guarantees. As it turned out, the rich are little concerned about such conditions as the development of transport infrastructure, cultural life and freedom of speech.

The authors of the report also found out the structure of the HNWI investment portfolio. Over the past year, wealthy citizens preferred to invest in bonds (the number of people who increased investments in this type of asset was 65% higher than the number of people who left bonds) and gold (47% in the same proportion). But wealthy people actively parted with shares (the frequency of sales was 77% higher than the frequency of purchases). As a result, the HNWI portfolio looked like this: 23% - real estate, 21% - investments in stocks and bonds, 15% - cash, 12% - alternative investments (art objects, jewelry, wines, sports clubs, etc.), 3% each - gold and currency, consumer goods - 2%.

The wealthy's much-loved real estate investment came with some unexpected twists last year. For example, the most rapid growth rate was demonstrated by the price per square meter in the capital of Kenya, Nairobi (+25%). For $1 million in this city, however, you can still buy 590 sq. m., which is astronomical for Western megacities. m of living space. For comparison, in Miami there are only 158 sq. m, in Kyiv - 127 sq. m, in Mumbai - 88 sq. m, in Beijing - 57 sq. m, in Manhattan - 43 sq. m, in Moscow - 42 sq. m, in Monaco - 17 sq. m (this is the minimum).

51% of the survey respondents expect to increase their capital through investments in real estate, and 42% expect to save it. It is noteworthy that Russian HNWIs rank first in the list of the most active buyers of a second home abroad.

HNWI spending on luxury goods increased by 17% last year, while donations to charity increased by just 10%.
