After the total defeat of the Arab-Russian bloc in the Six-Day War of 1967. Israeli troops seriously and permanently entrenched themselves in Sinai. The Arabs and their Russian allies at that time did not have the strength to wage a large-scale war against Israel - the Russians feverishly restored the defeated Arab armies, pumping them up with their weapons. However, these efforts were clearly not enough - the combat readiness of the Arabs left much to be desired, and the Soviets took a gamble - they decided to fight against Israel instead of the Arabs.

Tens of thousands of Russian military personnel were transferred to Egypt as part of air defense divisions, aviation regiments, and artillery brigades. The Russians, through regular air raids, artillery shelling and the actions of sabotage groups, hoped to wear down the Israeli troops, whose resources were limited. The fighting at Suez in 1969-1970, provoked by the Russians, was called the War of Attrition.

Israel found a non-trivial response to the Russian challenge - the power of Israeli retaliatory strikes increased every day, the enemy suffered heavy losses - up to 300 corpses per day, and eventually a lull was established on the Suez Canal again until October 1973.
