The most popular game in April among American gamers was the action game Prototype 2, VG24/7 reports with reference to the research company NPD Group. The release of the action took place on April 24. Second place in the final chart was taken by another new product of the month - the game Kinect Star Wars from Microsoft, released exclusively for the Xbox 360 and Kinect consoles. It went on sale on April 3.

The third position was taken by the shooter Modern Warfare 3, which a month ago occupied only eighth place. In fourth place is the golf simulator Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13, and in fifth is NBA 2K12. Sixth place went to RPG The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, and Mario Party 9 remained in seventh position.

Eighth place went to the March leader - action-RPG Mass Effect 3. The dance game Just Dance 3 was in ninth place, and MLB 12: The Show rounded out the top ten most popular games of the month.

The most popular device of the month for the sixteenth time in a row was the Xbox 360 console. In April, Microsoft managed to sell more than 236 thousand of these consoles. As the MCV portal notes, the average cost of the device was higher than before - due to the fact that in April gamers bought a themed set, which included the console itself (stylized as R2-D2 and C-3PO), a Kinect controller and the Kinect Star game Wars.

Analysts noted that the overall U.S. market for games, as well as gaming devices and accessories, was down 32 percent year-over-year, with total sales revenue for April amounting to $630.4 million. At the same time, device sales decreased by 32 percent (profit from them amounted to 189.7 million), and game sales fell by 42 percent to 292.1 million. But sales of accessories increased by one percent compared to April 2011 and amounted to $148.6 million.

NPD analyst Anita Fraser noted that the decline in sales is associated with the early Easter, which is why consumers preferred to make pre-Easter purchases in March rather than April.
