Civil protest through a photo lens

In the Museum named after Andrei Sakharov, with the support of Publicpost, the Civil Protest photo festival was opened, where everyone can see what happened at recent rallies, the eyes of photographers. More than two hundred photographs were sent to the competition, and not only professionals were among the winners.

“We did not suspect that our event would be so relevant when all this was started a year ago,” said Alexander Sorin, curator of the Fotodoc documentary photo center before handing prizes. “We thought that we would get portraits of people in different types who go to Strategy-31, but after the announcement of the competition, something unimaginable began,” added Sorin.

The consideration of the competitive work ended in April, but in May, protest activity resumed in Russia. However, in the A. Sakharov Museum, it will be possible to see the May works of photographers from rallies and processions. The exhibition will last until May 27 from 13.00 to 20.00 seven days a week.

“I know by myself what this is given to the blood. What is being recorded on the streets, the history of the country that develops is changing,” said Sorin.

The first place in the nomination "Single Photography" was taken by Artem Zhitenev from Moscow with work from the series "rally for fair elections". The picture that resembles pre -revolutionary painting was taken on February 4, 2012.

In second place-Alexander Dryal from St. Petersburg with a photograph that flooded all social networks-"I went on a date." In the picture is a young man who was just about to see his beloved girl, but got into a car carrier.



“After the elections passed, it feels like they took you and outlined you in the mud. Therefore, it was a impulse to come and shoot what was happening, to capture the moment. It was at least some kind of outlet,” said Publicpost, one of the winners, 21-year-old student Alexander Dryal. “I went to rallies, I went to Isaac, this morning, I went to shoot it. What is happening on the Arbat.

In third place - Sergey Loiko from Moscow. His picture was taken on August 31, 2010 on the Triumphal Square in the capital, when they rally only for the right to rally promised by the Constitution.



Vasily Popov from Moscow with a series of pictures “From elections to the elections”, the winners of the competition in the “Several Photos” nomination, the second and third places were taken by the Petersburger Mikhail Domozhilov with the series 5.03 and Nationalists on the streets.

The jury of the competition included photographers Igor Gavrilov, Yuri Kozyrev and Sergey Maximishin, photo editor Natalya Squit and publisher Leonid Gusev.

“I saw the first pictures on the monitor - and I felt scared,” shared a member of the jury, photographer Igor Gavrilov. “But then - well, photographically, dynamic. You can subscribe with pride under each picture.” Gavrilov’s congratulatory speech ended with advice to look at rallies from different points, because "a picket is not only a riot police blow on the back."

According to the results of the event, everyone could get an album with photographs that included pictures not presented at the festival.
